Dear Parents,

Welcome back to another year of school! This letter should answer any questions you have regarding snacks, assignment books, book reports, tests, and homework.

Snacks:

The kids should bring a healthy snack, such as fruit, vegetables, yogurt, crackers and cheese, crackers and peanut butter, pretzels, popcorn, 100% fruit juice (except red or purple flavors; they stain the carpet), jerky, etc.

It is very important to keep hydrated during the day, so please send a water bottle to school for your child to keep on his/her desk.

Assignment Books:

Each day the kids write down their daily assignments in an assignment book that will be provided for them. The assignment books may go home for you to look at, but please remind your child to bring it back the next day.

Homework:

Homework amounts will vary depending on the subject and units being covered. We do allow work time in school. Homework is generally due the next day, and students will have to stay in for recess or after school to complete any late assignments. I've typed up a homework tip sheet that gives you more information on this topic. Parents sometimes ask me what they can do to help their child do well in school, and I came across a great suggestion list that I wanted to share with you.

We have weekly Skills Homework Packets. The kids have a week to complete them. It would be great if you could sit down with your child and work them together, and then sign the top. The packets are short and don't take a lot of time to complete, but they help reinforce important skills.

Book Reports:

Students are required to read at least 200 pages each month in a chapter book or books on their independent reading level. Book report forms are provided. The reports are due on the first school day of the new month. If your child doesn't get his/her reports in on time, we will call you to let you know.

Tests:

The kids will be informed of tests 2+ days in advance to give them time to organize their notes/study guide. We do spend class time studying, but it is so helpful when parents spend time studying with their children, too.

Every Friday we will have a Spelling test, and depending on the unit, there may be a definition test, too. The kids will be given their new list on Fridays so they have the weekend to study. However, we won't have Spelling on three-day weeks.

I am really looking forward to working with you and your child this school year!

Sincerely,
Deb Forward
